St Julian's

Grotty, unkempt and unremarkable by day, St Julian's is the largest nightlife area in Malta and only wakes to the sound of nightfall. Spinola Bay is a pretty area where traditional Maltese boats or luzzus mingle with more luxurious power boats in the bay. The setting is picturesque and sets the scene for an enjoyable evening dining al fresco at one of the seafront restaurants. The heart of St Julian's is an area consisting of some six streets called Paceville. This concentrated space is home to numerous bars, nightclubs and restaurants and boasts a large cinema complex, ten pin bowling complex and a shopping complex. Raucous, loud and buzzing, Paceville is an ideal place for a wild night out if you are somewhere between 18 and 25 - as one travel guide puts it, 'this is sleep-all-day and party-all-night territory'.

St Julian's boasts Malta's most prominent landmark. Fondly and angrily dubbed, 'the eyesore', the Portomaso sky-rise tower is the tallest building in Malta and stands out like a sore thumb as far away as Mdina. Portomaso is an exclusive resort and yachting harbour much loved and loathed by locals. The resort offers water sports facilities such as sailing and windsurfing and there's plenty of refreshment to be found in the café's and restaurants around the harbour. The revolving Rooftop bar is one of the few places in St Julian's that draws a mature clientele.

The oldest attraction in St Julians is the casino. Once the home of a wealthy aristocrat, the casino is situated on the waterfront and forms part of the 5 Star Westin Dragonara Resort. In addition to the usual 5 star facilities, the resort's private lido is popular with locals. Less upmarket is the popular Bay Street Complex. Open all day and most of the night, the complex provides late night shopping as well as restaurants, bars and the Hard Rock Café.
