Chapel Trail Cantata 2026 in Gozo: A Free Evening of Choir Music in Historic Chapels, 24 October

Gozo has dozens of small wayside chapels, and most visitors only ever see them from the outside. The Chapel Trail Cantata is a rare chance to step inside a few of them and hear live choral music in the place it was written for. On Saturday 24 October 2026, the Gozo choir Schola Cantorum Jubilate leads an evening trail by bus, stopping at a series of historic chapels where its adult choir and soloists sing a short programme at each stop. Entry is free.

What to expect

The evening runs from 6pm to 10pm. Guests meet at the Park and Ride at Ta’ Xħajma and travel between the chapels by bus, with guides on board. At every stop a guide talks about the chapel’s architecture, its history and the art inside, plus the landmarks nearby, and then the choir takes over. It is a calm, unhurried kind of night, closer to a small pilgrimage with music than a big concert.

  • When: Saturday 24 October 2026, 6pm to 10pm
  • Start: Park and Ride, Ta’ Xħajma, Gozo
  • Entry: free
  • Organiser: Schola Cantorum Jubilate

The organisers have not published the list of chapels or the exact route, and the listings we saw do not say whether you need to book a seat on the bus. Since bus places are limited by nature, it is worth contacting the choir through its website (scjchoir.com) before you go.

Tips for visitors

Chapels are small and can get warm once full, but the walk between bus and door is often on rural lanes, so wear comfortable shoes and bring a light layer for the evening breeze. Dress respectfully, as these are consecrated places, and keep phones on silent during the singing. The same weekend is busy in Gozo: the free Daqqa Folk nights in Qala run until 11pm, so you could catch the end of them after the trail.

Opera fans can also visit the free Scenographer’s Opera exhibition at Teatru Astra in Victoria, which opens the next day.

How to get there

The Park and Ride at Ta’ Xħajma is on the main road between Mġarr Harbour and Victoria, close to Victoria, so it is easy to reach by car straight off the Gozo Channel ferry. Parking there is free. If you are coming by public transport, buses from Mġarr to Victoria pass along this road, but check the timetable for your return, as late buses are less frequent.
