Mixegħla Milied 2026 in Qala, Gozo: Free Christmas Tree Lighting on 29 November

In Gozo, the start of Christmas is something each village marks in its own way, and in Qala it happens with the switching on of the lights. Mixegħla Milied 2026 fil-Qala takes place on Sunday 29 November, from 18:00 to 22:30, in Qala Square. The word mixegħla simply means “lighting”, and the evening centres on lighting the village Christmas tree, surrounded by carols and festive entertainment. It is free and open to everyone.

What to expect

  • The lighting of the Christmas tree in front of the parish church.
  • Traditional Christmas carols sung by local groups.
  • Festive entertainment for children and families.
  • A friendly village crowd, with locals catching up in the square as the evening goes on.

The exact running order and any food or stalls were not announced when we checked, so arrive with an open mind and treat it as a relaxed community evening rather than a big show.

Tips for visitors

  • Come around 18:00 if you want to see the tree lit; small village events often start with the main moment.
  • Bring a warm layer. Qala is on high ground in the east of Gozo and late-November evenings can be breezy.
  • Make a full Gozo Christmas day of it: the same Sunday you can visit Christmas Magic at Għar Ilma or the Christmas fair in San Lawrenz before heading to Qala in the evening.

Getting there

Qala is only a few minutes’ drive up the hill from Mġarr Harbour, so it is one of the easiest Gozo villages to reach from the ferry. Buses link Qala with Victoria and Mġarr, but evening services are less frequent, so check times in advance or plan a taxi back to the harbour. Parking is usually available on the streets around the square. If you are new to the island, our guide to things to do in Gozo has more ideas for the rest of your stay, and our Christmas markets guide lists what else is on across both islands.
