New Year’s Eve in Malta: Valletta Party, Fireworks and Tips

Short answer: the big free party is in St George’s Square in Valletta, with live music and fireworks over the Grand Harbour at midnight. Gozo has its own celebration, and clubs, hotels and restaurants across Malta sell tickets for parties and dinners. Plan your transport early, because Valletta is very busy that night and parking is limited.

This guide is for 31 December 2026. The official line-up and transport plans for this year are not published yet, so where I describe last year’s night, I say so clearly. Check the official sites close to the date.

Valletta: the national New Year’s Eve party

The main event is the national celebration in Valletta. The Valletta Cultural Agency lists it for 31 December 2026 in St George’s Square, from 10pm to 2am, with local and international performers and a fireworks display over the Grand Harbour. The names of the performers for 2026 were not announced when I checked.

What last year looked like

For New Year’s Eve 2025, the night started at about 8:45pm and closed at 2am. A local band opened the evening, a string orchestra played with several Maltese singers, DJs played the countdown set, and the international act John Newman performed at midnight. The fireworks were described by the organisers as the largest yet for this event. Thousands of people came. There was also a second public concert in Bormla (Cospicua), across the harbour. Do not assume the same format this year, but it shows what to expect.

Tips for the square

  • Arrive early if you want to be near the stage. Big crowds build up well before midnight.
  • Dress warmly. Valletta can be breezy in the evening, and you will be standing for hours.
  • Pick a meeting point before you go. Mobile signal can be weak in a big crowd.
  • For the fireworks only, you do not have to be in the square. Viewpoints across the harbour also give a good view, but expect crowds there too.

Entry has been free in past years, but check the Valletta Cultural Agency page for 2026 rules. You can phone them on +356 2124 2018.

Gozo: a public party in Victoria

If you prefer a smaller crowd, Gozo has held its own public New Year’s Eve event in Victoria, the island’s capital, with free entry in earlier years. I could not confirm the 2026 programme, so look at the Gozo events listings before you travel.

If you are staying in Malta, check the last ferry home before you commit. Many people book a hotel or farmhouse on Gozo for the night instead. Restaurants in places like Xlendi have also run New Year’s Eve dinners that need a booking by phone or email.

Clubs, galas and dinners

Paid events are everywhere. In past years the options included club nights in Paceville and St Julian’s, gala dinners in Mdina, Valletta and hotels, and bigger music nights in venues around the island. Tickets are usually sold online or by phone, and prices differ a lot. I will not quote prices, because 2026 prices are not out yet. A few things to know:

  • Book early for dinners. Good tables go in the weeks before the night.
  • Check what is included. Some tickets include food and drinks, others only entry.
  • Compare locations. Paceville is the party area, Mdina and Valletta feel more elegant, and Gozo is quieter.

For other festive events in the same weeks, read our Christmas in Malta guide, and for a village-style Christmas evening, see the Kirkop European Christmas Village.

Getting to Valletta and back

This is the part many visitors get wrong. Roads around Valletta are busy, taxis are in high demand after midnight, and parking in the capital is limited.

Buses

Malta Public Transport has run special late-night services from Valletta terminus for New Year’s Eve in recent years. For 2024, official routes left Valletta between about 23:30 and 00:25 to places such as Sliema, Msida, Mosta, Paola, Marsaxlokk, Marsaskala and Ċirkewwa, with the last trips returning around 02:00. Fares were free with a personalised Tallinja card and about €3 for a cash ticket on board. For New Year’s Eve 2025, the plan was bigger: special night buses on 16 regular routes plus 5 night routes, with the same fares, and Valletta ferry services extended until 1am. The 2026 timetable is not published yet. Look for it on the Malta Public Transport site in the last week of December.

Other options

  • Stay close. Hotels in Sliema, Gzira and St Julian’s are a short ride from Valletta, which makes the journey home shorter and cheaper.
  • Taxis and ride apps. Expect high demand after midnight. Order early and be patient.
  • Do not drive after drinking. Police increased road checks around the last New Year’s Eve, so leave the car behind.

Weather: what to wear

Malta is mild but not warm in winter. Long-term averages at Luqa show December highs of about 17 C and lows of about 12 C, and January highs of about 16 C and lows of about 10 C. Evenings by the harbour feel colder with wind. Bring a warm jacket, a scarf, comfortable shoes, and a light rain layer, as December is one of the wetter months. Check Malta this week for the forecast and wind and sea conditions in the days before. More about the season is in our Malta in December and winter in Malta guides.

Before and after: a simple plan

  • 31 December, daytime: Walk the streets of Valletta, have lunch, or visit a museum. Some sites close early or are shut around the holidays, so see our Malta public holidays page.
  • Early evening: Eat dinner somewhere you booked. Try something local from our Maltese food guide.
  • From about 9pm: Head to the square or your chosen venue.
  • 1 January: It is a public holiday. Many shops and some attractions close, so check opening hours first. Take a slow day, a coastal walk, or a long lunch.
