Christmas in Valletta 2026: Lights, Entertainment & Festive Fun in the Capital

From late November until New Year’s Eve, Malta’s capital puts on its festive best. Christmas in the Capital fills Valletta with lights, decorations, live entertainment and family activities, and it is one of the easiest ways to soak up Maltese Christmas spirit without spending a cent.

Christmas in Valletta 2026: Key Details

  • Dates: Wednesday 25th November to Thursday 31st December 2026
  • Time: 8am to midnight
  • Location: Around Valletta
  • Entry: Free
  • Organiser: Valletta Cultural Agency

What to Expect

Republic Street and Merchants Street glow under festive lights, and squares across the city host seasonal displays, music and activities for children. Walking through Valletta after dark in December, with the baroque facades lit up and carols drifting from the churches, is a real highlight of winter in Malta.

Make a Day of It

  • Visit St John’s Co-Cathedral or the Grandmaster’s Palace during the day.
  • Catch the sunset over the Grand Harbour from Upper Barrakka Gardens.
  • Stay on for the lights and enjoy dinner in one of Valletta’s restaurants.
  • Look out for traditional Maltese Christmas cribs (presepji) displayed around the city.

Tips

Weekends in December are very busy, so visit on a weekday evening for a calmer experience. The Valletta bus terminus connects to almost every part of the island, which makes public transport the easiest way in and out.

Programme details are announced closer to the season. Check the Valletta Cultural Agency’s official channels for the latest updates.
