What You’ll See
Ta’ Mintna is a group of underground burial chambers, or hypogea, cut into the rock in late Roman times. The central chamber is the highlight: it has an unusually well-preserved triclinium, a table carved out of the rock where families would hold commemorative meals for their dead, with rows of small triangular niches opposite it where oil lamps once stood.
The two chambers next to it are known for the decoration that survives around some of their window-shaped tombs. It’s a small site, but a fascinating glimpse into how people in Roman Malta honoured their loved ones.
Tour or Open Visit?
- Choose the curator-led tour if you want the full story. With only 10 places per tour, you’ll get a personal, in-depth visit and the chance to ask questions. Book early, as places are very limited.
- Choose the open visit between 10am and 12pm if you just want to see the catacombs for yourself at a tiny price.
Combine It With
Mqabba is close to the south coast, so you can easily continue to Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra or the Blue Grotto afterwards. If you love catacombs, don’t miss St Paul’s Catacombs in Rabat too.
Tips
- Wear sturdy, comfortable shoes for the steps and uneven rock floors.
