Every October, one of the most beautiful sights in the Mediterranean unfolds in the Grand Harbour. Dozens of racing yachts gather beneath Valletta’s bastions for the start of the Rolex Middle Sea Race, one of the most famous and demanding offshore sailing races in the world.
Rolex Middle Sea Race 2026: Key Details
- Race start: Saturday 17th October 2026, 11am
- Start line: Grand Harbour, Valletta
- Finish: Marsamxett Harbour
- Distance: 606 nautical miles
- Prize giving: Saturday 24th October 2026 at noon
- Organiser: Royal Malta Yacht Club
The Course
The race takes crews on an anti-clockwise loop around Sicily, passing the active volcano of Stromboli, then on past Pantelleria and Lampedusa before returning to Malta. Changeable autumn winds make it a real test of seamanship, and finishing times vary from a couple of days for the fastest boats to almost a week for smaller yachts.
Where to Watch the Start
The start is free to watch and is one of the best photo opportunities of the year. Popular spots include:
- Upper Barrakka Gardens, Valletta: the classic panoramic view over the harbour
- Lower Barrakka Gardens: a little closer to the harbour mouth
- Fort St Angelo and the Birgu waterfront: great views from the other side
- Senglea Point (Gardjola Gardens): a quieter alternative with excellent views
Tips
Arrive at least an hour early, as the best viewpoints fill up quickly. Bring water and a hat, since October sunshine in Malta can still be strong. Public transport or a ferry across the harbour is much easier than finding parking in Valletta on race day.
Timings can change due to weather. Check the official Rolex Middle Sea Race website for the latest updates.
