One of the first Christmas events in Gozo each year happens in the small village square of San Lawrenz. Swejjaq u l-Fiera tal-Milied, which roughly means “little markets and Christmas fair”, takes place on Sunday 29 November 2026 from 12:00 to 17:00 in Pjazza San Lawrenz. It is organised by the San Lawrenz Local Council and entry is free.
What to expect
The afternoon starts with the switching on of the village’s Christmas decorations, so it feels like the official start of the season in this corner of Gozo. Around the square you will find:
- Local artisans with handmade nativity cribs, gifts and festive decorations
- Folk music from the Ta’ Ċangura Folk Group and dance performances
- A workshop on making the traditional Maltese honey ring (qagħaq tal-għasel)
- Old-style children’s games, arts and crafts and storytelling
- Carols, street entertainment and a few festive characters
- Food and drink stalls with seasonal treats
It is a village event rather than a huge market, which is exactly its charm: relaxed, friendly and very Gozitan.
Tips for visitors
- Bring some cash for the smaller stalls.
- Arrive early afternoon if you want a calm look at the cribs before the square gets busy.
- San Lawrenz is close to Dwejra and the Ta’ Pinu Basilica, so you can easily combine the market with a coastal walk.
- The same day, Villa Rundle in Victoria launches its Illuminated Gardens, and the Christmas Magic display at Għar Ilma also opens, so you can turn it into a full Christmas day out.
Details can change, so it is worth checking the San Lawrenz Local Council page or calling them on 2156 3556 before you travel.
Getting there
From Malta, take the Gozo Channel ferry from Ċirkewwa to Mġarr, then drive or take a bus to Victoria and change for San Lawrenz; by car it is around 20 minutes from Mġarr. Our Gozo day trip guide explains ferry costs and timings, and our page on Christmas in Malta has more festive ideas across both islands.
