It’s All About the Bones! at St Paul’s Catacombs, Rabat: Kids’ Workshop on 2 November 2026

If you have a curious child who asks a hundred questions about skeletons, dinosaurs or “what’s inside us”, this little workshop is a lovely way to start November. On Monday 2 November 2026, Heritage Malta is running It’s All About the Bones! at St Paul’s Catacombs in Rabat, a family activity led by an osteologist, which is simply a scientist who studies bones.

What happens during the session

The session runs from 10:00 to 11:30 and is aimed at children aged 9 and over. Kids learn how the human skeleton is put together, then compare human bones with animal ones by looking closely, asking questions and talking it through with the specialist. It ties science and archaeology together in a way that makes sense to children, and the setting does a lot of the work: these are some of the largest underground Roman burial grounds on the island, so the subject feels very real.

It is a hands-on, discussion-style activity rather than a lecture, which keeps it lively. Do not expect anything gory; the tone is educational and friendly.

Tickets and booking

  • Each child’s ticket also covers one accompanying adult.
  • Book online through Heritage Malta or in person at any Heritage Malta museum or site.
  • The price was not clearly listed when we checked, so confirm it when booking.
  • Places on family workshops like this are usually limited, so booking early is wise.

Tips for your visit

  • Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early, as the catacombs are a short walk from the main Rabat streets and parking nearby fills quickly.
  • The underground passages are uneven and can feel cool, so bring comfortable shoes and a light top.
  • Make a morning of it: after the workshop, walk a few minutes up to Mdina. Our Mdina guide has ideas for a relaxed stroll and a snack.

Getting there

St Paul’s Catacombs are on Triq Hal-Bajjada in Rabat. Several buses from Valletta stop in Rabat, near the Mdina gate, and from there it is roughly a 10 minute walk.
