These are the theory test question banks published by Transport Malta, with the correct answers ticked. The quiz above uses exactly these questions.

Note: the car bank is Version 4 (2014) and the motorcycle bank is Version 3 (2013). A few questions mention things that have since changed, such as the road tax disc, VRT, or older speed figures. For current fees, fines and rules, read our driving in Malta guide.

What the test covers

The questions are grouped into these topics. “Road and Traffic Signs” is the largest group in both banks, so learn the signs first.

  • Road and traffic signs
  • Vulnerable road users (pedestrians, cyclists, horse riders, motorcyclists)
  • Rules of the road
  • Vehicle handling, safety margins and hazard awareness
  • Attitude and alertness
  • Accidents and first aid
  • Safety and your vehicle (or motorcycle)
  • Documents, dual carriageway rules and other vehicles

Tips to pass first time

  • Read every word. Many questions ask what you should NOT do, or ask for TWO or THREE answers.
  • Learn the sign shapes. Circles give orders, triangles warn, rectangles inform, and the octagon is STOP.
  • Use your mistakes list. The quiz saves every wrong answer. Questions you miss twice come back first in the Weak questions test.
  • Practise under time. 45 minutes for 35 questions is about 77 seconds each. The mock test runs the same clock.
  • Don’t learn answer letters. In the real test the order can differ, so learn the reason behind each answer.

After the theory test

With your pass certificate you can apply for the practical test once all lessons on your Student Record Sheet are done. Our driving in Malta guide covers the practical test, licence rules for non-EU residents, penalty points and fines.
