Fjakkolata 2026: The Torch-Lit Celebration of Light at Għar Ilma, Gozo

One of the most atmospheric nights of the Gozitan autumn is on tonight. Fjakkolata: Celebration of Light takes place on Sunday 11th October 2026 at Għar Ilma, near Santa Luċija in Kerċem, Gozo. As the sun goes down, the hillside fills with traditional torches (fjakkoli), and it is free to attend.

Event details

  • Date: Sunday 11th October 2026
  • Time: 6pm to 11pm
  • Where: Għar Ilma, Santa Luċija, Kerċem, Gozo
  • Entry: free

What to expect

Fjakkolata is a local, family-friendly evening built around light, music and village tradition. It is quite different from the big festivals on the main island, which is exactly what makes it special. Go as the light fades for the best atmosphere.

Tips for visiting

  • Wear comfortable shoes, as the ground is uneven and you may walk in the dark.
  • Bring a light jacket. Evenings in Gozo get breezy in October.
  • Gozo Channel ferries run from Ċirkewwa to Mġarr throughout the day and night, so plan your return crossing.
  • Check the organisers’ social media pages for the latest programme, as details can change.
