Gozo does Christmas in a smaller, slower and more local way than Malta. You will not find giant crowds or big commercial markets. You will find a live nativity village in the fields, a lit-up garden in Victoria, cribs in village churches and a parade down the main street. If you like the idea of a quiet, family-style Christmas by the sea, Gozo is a very good choice.
Below is what is planned for the 2026 season, how to get there and how to fit it into a day or an overnight stay. Dates come from Gozo event listings and local organisers, so please treat them as a guide and check before you travel.
When does Christmas start in Gozo?
The season builds from the end of November. Event listings show the Villa Rundle gardens in Victoria lighting up from 28 November 2026, with a Christmas market in the same gardens from 29 November to 24 December. The big nativity and parade dates fall in mid-December, and many cribs stay on display until early January.

The best Christmas things to see in Gozo
Bethlehem f’Ghajnsielem, the live nativity village
This is the headline event. Volunteers from Ghajnsielem turn the fields at Ta’ Passi into a recreation of biblical Bethlehem. You walk through streets with artisans showing old crafts, shepherds with real animals, market scenes and actors in period costume, ending at the grotto. It is outdoors, so wear comfortable shoes.
Listings for 2026 show opening days from 12 December 2026 to early January 2027, starting from about 14:30 on the first day, and entry has been free in the past. Opening days change each year, so check the Ghajnsielem Local Council page or the Gozo events calendar for the exact days before you go. The village is popular with families, so go early in the opening window if you can.
Villa Rundle Illuminated Gardens, Victoria
The public gardens in Victoria (Rabat) are decorated with lights each year. Listings give 28 November 2026 as the start, with free entry in the evenings. The Christmas market in the same gardens is listed for 29 November to 24 December, with times that vary, so check before you plan an evening around it. It is a gentle place for a walk after dinner.
Christmas parade in Victoria
A Christmas parade is listed for Republic Street in Victoria on 19 December 2026 in the evening. It is free and fun for children. Arrive early to find a spot along the street, and plan dinner in Victoria before or after.
Cribs and nativity displays
Cribs, called presepji, are a big part of Maltese Christmas and Gozo takes them seriously. A large nativity crib is listed at the Il-Hagar museum in Victoria from 1 December 2026 to 10 January 2027, free to enter. Parish churches and village displays add more, so it is worth stepping into a church if you pass one with its doors open.
Concerts, family events and New Year
Smaller events are listed through December, including a free concert in Independence Square in Victoria on 12 December, a family event in Munxar on 14 December and a Christmas trail in Fontana the same day. On 31 December, Independence Square in Victoria hosts a free New Year’s Eve party. For the Malta side of the New Year, see our New Year’s Eve in Malta guide.
How to get to Gozo for Christmas events
Gozo Channel runs the main car and passenger ferry between Cirkewwa in Malta and Mgarr in Gozo. The crossing takes about 25 minutes and the service runs daily. The published schedule at the time of writing covers up to 8 November 2026, so a new winter timetable should follow. Check the Gozo Channel website for exact times, and for any change on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, when the service can be affected. Children aged 3 to 12 pay a small fare, and very young children travel free.
Foot passengers are validated on the Gozo side, so keep your ticket. If you are driving, remember that evening events end late and winter roads can be wet.

What to pack and what the weather is like
December in Gozo is mild but can be wet and windy, especially in the evenings and by the sea. Bring layers, a waterproof jacket and shoes that cope with muddy fields at the nativity village. Frequently asked questions
Is Gozo good at Christmas?
Yes, if you like a calm, traditional atmosphere. Expect cribs, lights, small markets and community events rather than big shopping crowds.
Is Bethlehem f’Ghajnsielem free?
Listings have shown free entry in past years and for 2026, but organisers can change this. Check the Ghajnsielem Local Council page before you go.
Can I visit Gozo for Christmas as a day trip?
Yes. The ferry crossing is about 25 minutes, so a day trip from Malta works well. Check the last ferry back, especially if you stay for an evening event.
Are shops and attractions open on Christmas Day?
Christmas Day is a public holiday, so most shops are closed and public transport and ferries may run a reduced service. See our Malta public holidays page and plan ahead.
Summary
Christmas in Gozo is about the live Bethlehem village, the lights and market in Victoria, the cribs and the parade. It is easy to reach, mostly free and best enjoyed slowly. Prices and times change, so check the official sites and the ferry timetable before you go.
