Christmas Magic 2026 at Għar Ilma, Santa Luċija, Gozo

Christmas Magic is one of Gozo’s best-loved festive displays. Set in the quiet countryside of Santa Luċija, near Kerċem, the Għar Ilma area is decorated with lights, and the highlight is a tall Christmas tree made entirely of lights that glows across the valley after dark. It is free, relaxed and very family friendly, which is why so many Gozitans make it part of their December routine.

Key details

  • Opens: Sunday 29 November 2026
  • Runs until: early January 2027 (local listings show it running to around 6 January)
  • Hours: listed as 08:00 to 23:00, but the display is really made for the evening
  • Venue: Għar Ilma, Triq Għar Ilma, Santa Luċija (Kerċem), Gozo
  • Entry: free

Specific activities such as music or children’s events can vary from year to year and were not confirmed at the time of writing, so check local listings before you go.

What to expect

This is not a busy market but a peaceful, scenic stop. Families come for photos in front of the big tree, couples stroll around the lit-up spot, and the rural setting feels very different from the town lights of Valletta. It pairs nicely with the Villa Rundle Illuminated Gardens in Victoria on the same evening, as the two are only a short drive apart.

Tips for visitors

  • Arrive after sunset, which is around 16:45 in early December.
  • Bring a light jacket, because evenings in the Gozo countryside can feel cool and breezy.
  • Wear comfortable shoes, as some ground around the site is uneven.
  • Weekends close to Christmas are the busiest. Weeknights are quieter.

How to get there

Santa Luċija is a small hamlet on the western side of Kerċem, about 10 minutes by car from Victoria. A car or taxi is the easiest option in the evening, since bus services to the area are less frequent at night. If you are coming over from Malta, take the Ċirkewwa to Mġarr ferry; our Gozo day trip guide covers the crossing.
