Picnic in the 1800s at Borġ in-Nadur: Victorian Afternoon Tea on 17 October 2026

Most people know Borġ in-Nadur as a quiet hilltop of ancient stone walls above Birżebbuġa. On Saturday 17th October 2026, Heritage Malta is bringing it to life in a very different way: as the setting for a Victorian-style picnic, the kind that curious gentlemen and ladies held when the first excavators were poking around Malta’s prehistoric sites in the 1800s.

Key details

  • Date: Saturday 17th October 2026
  • Time: 1pm to 4pm (be there by 12:45pm)
  • Venue: Borġ in-Nadur Prehistoric Complex, Sqaq in-Nadur, Birżebbuġa
  • Tickets: €55 per person, €45 for Heritage Malta members, booked online in advance
  • Organiser: Heritage Malta, with Taste History

What to expect

Think of it as an afternoon out of a period drama. Re-enactors in 19th-century costume will mingle with guests, there are old-fashioned games and some dancing, and one actor plays an eccentric excavator who has clearly spent too long digging in the Maltese sun. The food is a proper afternoon tea: sandwiches, scones with clotted cream and jam, sponge cake, biscuits and cheese with crackers, plus a glass of Prosecco when you arrive and tea, water or juice during the afternoon.

It is a relaxed, sit-on-the-grass kind of event, so it suits couples, groups of friends and families who like history with a bit of fun. If you enjoy this kind of thing, our guide to Heritage Malta museums and sites has plenty more ideas.

Tips for visitors

  • Bring your own picnic blanket. A few are available on site, but not many.
  • Book early, as places are limited and it is a one-day event.
  • The site is open and exposed, so pack a hat and sunscreen, or a light jacket if the October wind picks up.
  • Prices are the same for adults and children, and the organisers do not list an age limit, so check with Heritage Malta if you are bringing small kids.

Getting there and making a day of it

Borġ in-Nadur sits on the edge of Birżebbuġa in the south of Malta. The nearest bus stop is about a five-minute walk away, and there is usually street parking in the area. Since you will be in the south anyway, come down in the morning and stroll the harbour at Marsaxlokk, just around the bay, or take a quick look at the rock pools of St Peter’s Pool before heading up the hill for tea.

Details are based on Heritage Malta’s event listing. Weather or other changes can happen, so check the official page before you go.
