Ta’ Bistra is one of those places many people drive past without knowing it is there. Tucked into the edge of Mosta, this cluster of late Roman and Byzantine burial chambers is usually closed, but Heritage Malta opens it to the public on the last Sunday of every month. The next chance to go in is Sunday 25th October 2026.

What you will see
The catacombs are cut into a low ridge of soft rock and include a series of small tombs, some with carved table-like slabs where families gathered for funeral meals. The complex was partly lost when a road was built over it in the last century, and part of the visit is understanding how much survived. It is smaller and calmer than the big catacombs in Rabat, which makes it a good stop if you prefer to explore at your own pace without crowds.
If you have already seen St Paul’s Catacombs in Rabat, Ta’ Bistra is a nice comparison. The same weekend, Heritage Malta is also running a special opening at Ta’ Mintna Catacombs in Mqabba, so underground history fans can see both.
Tips for visitors
- Wear shoes with a good grip. Rock-cut steps and floors can be uneven.
- Some tombs are low and narrow, so it may not suit everyone with limited mobility.
- Bring a little cash in case card payment is not available on the day.
- Heritage Malta can change openings at short notice, so check their website before setting out.
Getting there
The site is on the outskirts of Mosta, and the nearest bus stop is about five minutes away on foot. Mosta is well served by buses from Valletta and the north. Pair the visit with a look at the famous Mosta Rotunda, then continue to Mdina for an afternoon walk, only a short drive away.
Times and prices are based on Heritage Malta’s listing for the monthly openings.
