Rolex Middle Sea Race 2026: Where to Watch the Start in Malta

Every October, Malta hosts one of the best sailing spectacles in the Mediterranean. The Rolex Middle Sea Race starts from the Grand Harbour in Valletta, and in 2026 the start is on Saturday 17 October at 11am. You do not need a ticket. You only need a good spot with a view of the water.

This is the 47th edition, organised by the Royal Malta Yacht Club. Here is what the race is, where to watch the start, and how to turn it into an easy day out.

The race at a glance

  • Date and time: Saturday 17 October 2026, start at 11am
  • Start: Grand Harbour, Valletta
  • Distance: about 606 nautical miles, a lap around Sicily and nearby islands before returning to Malta
  • Organiser: Royal Malta Yacht Club
  • Cost to watch: free from public areas

The boats take days to complete the course, so the start is the one moment when the whole fleet is together in front of you, with spinnakers up and the bastions of Valletta behind.

Where to watch the start

Upper Barrakka Gardens, Valletta

The classic view. From the terrace you look straight down over the Grand Harbour and can follow the yachts as they line up and leave. It is also the most popular spot, so arrive early.

Valletta Waterfront and the bastions

Closer to the water, with a good feeling of the boats moving past. A walk along the walls gives you several angles.

The Three Cities: Birgu, Senglea and Cospicua

The quieter option. Across the harbour from Valletta you get a wide view of the fleet with Valletta’s skyline behind it. Senglea’s Gardjola Gardens, at the tip of the peninsula, is a well-known viewpoint on the harbour.

Fort St Elmo area

The yachts leave the harbour past this end of Valletta, so it is a good place to see them head out to open water.

Tips for the day

  • Arrive early. The start is at 11am and the best spots in Valletta fill up. Aim to be there by 9:30 or 10am.
  • Bring sun protection and water. October can still be hot in the sun, with little shade on the bastions.
  • Do not drive into Valletta. Parking is limited. The Floriana car parks plus a short walk, or the bus, are easier.
  • Bring binoculars if you want to read the sail numbers and see the crews.
  • Check the weather. Wind decides how dramatic the start looks. Our October beach and weather guide has local tips on the wind.

Make a day of it

After the start, walk through Valletta for lunch and a coffee, or cross to the Three Cities by ferry. The same day, Ħamrun holds its Chocolate Festival (expected, check the date before you go), and Gozo hosts La Traviata at Teatru tal-Opra Aurora in the evening.
