What’s on in Malta this week
Malta changes a lot from one week to the next. One weekend the whole of Birgu is lit by candles, the next the sea is too rough for the Comino boats and everyone heads to the museums instead. This page puts everything that changes in one place, so you can plan your days in a couple of minutes: the 7-day weather, the sea temperature, events happening around the islands, the cheapest flights in and out, hotel prices and the best value boat trips and tours.
The weather and flight prices update by themselves during the day, and we add events by hand from our full Malta events calendar. If you are only here for Friday to Sunday, our guide to things to do in Malta this weekend goes into more detail on the best plans for each day.
Malta weather this week: what to expect
Malta is sunny for most of the year, but the forecast still matters more than you might think. Two things decide whether a day is good for the beach: the wind and the rain. A strong north east wind, the gregale, can make the sea rough on the north coast and stop boat trips to Comino, while a south westerly does the same to the bays on the other side. That is why every day in the forecast above shows the wind speed, and days with strong wind are marked as windy.
Rain in Malta usually comes in short, heavy showers rather than whole grey days. Even in the wettest months, from October to January, there are long dry and sunny spells between them. When showers are likely, it is a good moment to visit somewhere indoors, like the Hypogeum, the Archaeology Museum in Valletta or one of the forts run by Heritage Malta.
The sea is the big surprise for many visitors. It stays warm well into autumn, often around 25°C in October, and only drops to about 15°C or 16°C in February and March. Here is a rough guide to swimming through the year:
- June to October: warm sea, perfect for swimming, snorkelling and boat trips.
- November and May: fresh but very swimmable on calm, sunny days.
- December to April: cold for most people, but great for walking, hiking and sightseeing without the crowds.
Events in Malta this week and this weekend
There is almost always something happening. Summer is the season of village festas, with fireworks, brass bands and statues carried through the streets. Autumn brings food festivals, late openings at historic sites and big events like the Rolex Middle Sea Race. Winter has Christmas markets, concerts and Carnival in February.
Use the Today, Tomorrow and Weekend buttons in the events section to see only what is on at that time. Many events at heritage sites are free or very cheap, and some sell out, so it is worth booking ahead. You can also browse all of Malta’s heritage sites, from the temples of Ġgantija to the forts of the Grand Harbour.
Cheap flights to and from Malta
Malta has one airport, Malta International Airport near Luqa, about 20 minutes by car from Valletta and Sliema. It is well connected to most of Europe, with low-cost airlines flying to dozens of cities and KM Malta Airlines, the national airline, covering the main routes.
The flight list on this page shows the cheapest one way fares found by travellers in the last couple of days, both from Malta and to Malta, for the next 30 days. A few simple habits help you find a good price:
- Be flexible with your dates. Midweek flights are often much cheaper than Fridays and Sundays.
- Check nearby cities. Catania, Rome and Milan are often the cheapest routes, and Sicily makes an easy side trip.
- Book soon when you see a good fare. Cheap seats sell out fast, especially in school holidays.
Prices change quickly, so always press Check to see the live fare before you book.
Where to stay in Malta this week
Malta is small, so you are never far from anything, but the area you choose shapes your trip:
- Sliema and St Julian’s: the busiest area, with seafront promenades, restaurants, nightlife in Paceville and most of the big hotels. The ferry to Valletta takes about ten minutes.
- Valletta: the capital and a UNESCO World Heritage city. Small boutique hotels in old palazzos, quiet evenings and everything within walking distance.
- Buġibba, Qawra and St Paul’s Bay: good value, close to the ferries and boat trips, and popular with families.
- Mellieħa: the north, near Malta’s best sandy beaches such as Għadira and Golden Bay.
- Gozo: slower, greener and quieter, with farmhouses with private pools and some of the best diving in the Mediterranean.
The hotel map shows live prices for every area, and our list of Malta’s official 5-star hotels lets you check this weekend’s rate for each one with a single tap. For more ideas on where to go, see our guide to Malta’s towns and destinations.
Best things to do in Malta right now
If you only have a few days, these are the experiences most visitors remember:
- A boat trip to Comino and the Blue Lagoon. The water is famously clear, and most trips also visit the Crystal Lagoon and the sea caves. Go early or late to avoid the crowds.
- Kayaking or snorkelling. The coast is full of caves and small bays that you can only reach from the water.
- A first scuba dive. Malta and Gozo are among the best places in Europe to learn, with warm, clear water, wrecks and reefs close to shore.
- Valletta and the Three Cities. Walk the capital, then cross the Grand Harbour by traditional boat to Birgu.
- Time outdoors with kids. Malta’s family parks and gardens are free and great for a slower day.
The deals section above lists the best rated tours at the lowest prices we could find, with the date the prices were checked.
